Boston University follows its attaches to the foundation of the Newbury Biblical Institute in Newbury, Vermont in 1839, and was sanctioned with the name " Boston University " by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1869. The University composed formal Centennial observances both in 1939 &S1969.

On April 24¬_25, 1839 a gathering of Methodist clergymen and laymen at the Old Bromfield Street Church in Boston chose to make a Methodist religious school. Set up in Newbury , Vermont, the school was named the Newbury Biblical Institute.

In 1847, The Congregational Society in Concord, New Hampshire, welcomed the Institute to move to Concord and offered a neglected Congregational church building with a limit of 1200 individuals. Different natives of Concord took care of the redesigning expenses. One stipulation of the welcome was that the Institute stay in Concord for no less than 20 years. The sanction issued by New Hampshire assigned the school the " Methodist General Biblical Institute ", however it was generally called the " Concord Biblical Institute ."
